Calligraphy/Illuminations
Illuminations by Marlene Chapin
As a calligrapher, I became interested in making 'illuminations' which are scriptural texts painted with metallic gold inks. These verses when written upon our hearts reflect God's spirit and light in the world. The commissioned work that followed led me to incorporate iconographic images, from early Christian art, as somewhat of a reclamation of my own faith in Christ. Before the printing press, these illustrations could be visually understood at a time in history when few Christians could read scripture. Paintings were made by monks in scriptoriums who painstakingly copied pages that could take months to complete. A book of illuminations at that time costs the equivalent of buying a house today. My intention in the works is to reclaim the meaning of these historical images for contemporary Christians.
Below is the full view of "Annunciation" from the Advent series. Partial clips from other Advent, Lenten, and Medieval Calendar pieces are also presented. Prints of these and additional commissioned pieces can be purchased at https://fineartamerca.com/profiles/marlene-chapin
